Smart & Globe Remove Unlimited Data, Shifts to Volume Based Plans

Goodbye Unli-Data!

In yesterday’s Senate hearing on the slow Internet speeds of the country, both Smart and Globe stated that they’ve already shifted to volume-based data plans for their mobile offerings. Instead of having unlimited data with some sort of fair use policy that will cripple speed after a certain amount of usage, users will just have to pay for data buckets (X amount of pesos for X amount of data per month). In essence, heavy users will pay more while light users will pay less. You can learn more about this in the embedded video above (ABS-CBN News Report).

As we shift to volume based data, we suggest that you guys be conscious of the amount you’re using. You can easily track this on your smartphone. If you’re on Android just go to settings -> data and you should be able to see how much you’ve used for the month. You can even set alerts at certain thresholds so that you don’t go beyond your monthly allocation.

Speaking of unused monthly data, here’s one suggestion that we’d like to make to both Smart and Globe.

We Paid for Our Data, Can We Keep it Please?

Moving forward though we’d like to recommend to both telcos to consider something that a carrier called T-Mobile did in the US. The premise is simple — customers get to keep the unused data by rolling it over to the following month. T-Mobile calls this Data Stash.

Data Stash

For example, you buy 3GB of data for August. However by the end of the month you’ve only used 2GB. Come September other telcos will just ignore the fact you have 1GB left and just refresh that to 3GB again which is your monthly data allocation. T-Mobile will actually give you 4GB of data for September. They will rollover the 1GB unused from August to the following month. Awesomeness.

Hoping that either one of them does something like this. 🙂

    1. PLDT is still unlimited and will remain so. This is after all – wired. Whereas Globe is already capping their Tatt Home for new and renewing subscribers. This is unfair in my opinion. Wired nga diba! They are just sweetening their deals with free NBA, Spotify, etc. which is NOT a need for wired/home subscribers.

DSL has been unlimited ever since. No reason to change it to volume based.

  2. Well the difference is kahit papaano, US carriers are not that keen on screwing with their customers, unlike here. data stash is a hard sell here in the PH IMO.

    1. Trudat.

  4. Mahal pa ang internet.
    May Data Cap pa.
    Mahina pa ang internet speed.
    Bulok pa ang service.

Alright! Rock n Roll to the World!

  5. How about those who believed the unli data plan, which is apparently false advertising? Shouldn’t the telcos be made to work on giving these people what they actually paid for? I mean, yes, if they cannot continue with this, STOP the unli data plan for future customers. But, at least do right by those who have already been paying for months (or years) for unli data only for their data to be slowed down (to the extent na halos wala na talagang kwenta) after 5GB or less due to data cap.

Oh, for Globe users pa (I don’t know sa Smart, sorry) they offer something to get extra data gb. Like, you have to pay x amount for x amount of data gb for normal speed internet. But, even unli data users, na dapat nga walang data cap, will be charged extra for it if they get this. Correct me if I’m wrong, pero doesn’t that show na kaya naman pala na normal speed for unli data? Pera lang talaga habol nila.

      1. But the fair use policy still exists. For globe, “Unli” subscribers are essentially capped at 3gb per month, but are given almost unusable “unli” internet instead of being forced to pay more. Nevertheless, it’s still not the service that people expected when they signed up for unlimited internet plans.

        1. True that. I’m a Smart subscriber and unli pa din ako until now (walang cap.hehe).

  6. T-Mobile US can only get away with “Rollover Data” and TRULY Unlimited data because it’s small relative to AT&T and Verizon and needs more subscribers, and that they undercut both carriers as a result. Competition breeds Innovation. That, and government oversight.

The NTC time and time again, is ACTUALLY DEFENDING the practise of Overcharging for data, that is incredible. Instead of defending the customer, it’s defending the Corporations! A Duopoly and a Government protecting it? We’re ALL screwed,…

  8. I do customer service for AT&T Mobility and it’s actually the same. We used to offer unlimited data but you start to experience slow speeds when you reach 5gb of data usage. We now offer shared data plan with Rollover data

Kung ang hiningi nila e lower tax rates at iba pang business incentive acceptable pa pero dahil private company sila, they should do business at their own capital risk.

  10. What’ll happen if I do a lot of Youtube, iFlix, Tumblr, and the like, under Volume Based system? Will that cost me to lose more data faster than say, tweeting, FB browsing or emailing?

    1. Yes, kaya tingnan mo yung ad materials nila for volume based data, puro tweets, FB posts, and Instagram uploads ang binibida nila. Kung Youtube kasi, what’s the point watching a 144p video? Pag at least 360p, medyo malaking data na kakainin nun.

  11. Please excuse my French:

    P******** NIYO!!!! >.<

And then what? You tell us watching free crappy TV is better? Well f*** you, thanks but no thanks, f***ers!

This is what you get when you support economic protectionism: you protect lousy ISP's from even better ones……

  13. OMG… THESE TELCOS ARE THE LOWEST FORMS OF BEINGS (specially MVP) IN THE PLANET.
    THEY ARE NOT HUMAN!!!
THEY ARE ALL GREAT LIARS & THIEVES.
SIMPLY, ITS ALL ABOUT STEALING MONEY FROM THE INNOCENT SUBSCRIBERS AFTER HOOKING THEM INTO THEIR LOUSY SERVICE.
THEY ARE NO DIFFERENT FROM THE NTC WHO ARE TRAITORS TO THE FILIPINOS.
NEXT TO THE MRT, NTC IS THE WORST PNOY LEGACY AS PRESIDENT!
THE NTC HAS BEEN OBVIOUSLY “SILENCED”, BEING IN THE REGULAR PAYROLL OF THE TELCOS.
ME & HUNDRED OTHERS SHOULD KNOW, US BEING HELPLESS VICTIMS OF SUN CELLULAR (aka SMART).
AS UNLIDATA SUBSCRIBERS, WE HAVE BEEN FORCED TO PAY BIG FOR THE THROTTLED BANDWIDTH…
    B*** S**T THEM !!!
LET ALL OUR VOICES BE HEARD BY NOT VOTING MAR ROXAS WHO SAID HE IS PURSUING WHAT PNOY HAS STARTED.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY SCARY FOR ALL THE FILIPINOS!

    1. THE SURE KISS OF DEATH FOR PRESIDENTIABLE MAR ROXAS IS:
TELCOS + NTC = SURE LOST FOR MAR ROXAS…
TO THE FILIPINO MILLIONS WHO ARE VICTIMS TO THIS NTC & TELCOS CONNIVANCE, ITS PAY BACK TIME.
LETS VOTE ANYONE BUT MAR ROXAS FOR PRESIDENT !!!
ITS SO SCARY THAT NTC & THE TELCOS WILL AGAIN CONNIVE FOR MAKING MAR ROXAS WIN IN 2016.
      AFTER WHICH, WHAT COMES NEXT?
      MORE NTC VICTIMS?
      MORE VICTIMS FOR THE TELCOS?
NO MORE… WE WANT CHANGE !!!

LET ALL OUR VOICES BE HEARD NOW !!!

  14. even if you have this “If you’re on Android just go to settings -> data and you should be able to see how much you’ve used for the month”, the telcos don’t follow that. If you call them and says that you are monitoring your usage and you see that you are not in your limit yet, they will reply, do you have the system to do that? once you respond, I have data usage monitor in my phone. They will say it is not what they use and they have their own system to see the volume of data you are using. that is what globe told me. and will require you court order if you want to see your usage based on their so called system.

    i agree na tumulong ang gobyerno pero pag sana tumulong ang gobyerno sa pagpapatayo nang infastructure syempre dapat bababa lalo yung services nila at mag open nang mga new players sa telco business kahit na local services lng like within the city or within the island na services;

USELESS
