Spreading Fake News about COVID-19 Can Land You in Jail

Think and verify first before you share

Aside from giving cash aid and speeding up the testing of PUIs and PUMs, the recently-signed Bayanihan Heal as One Act has a provision punishing those spreading fake news about COVID-19.

Under the said provision, those who create or spread false information about the crisis will be punished by a two-month jail sentence and fines of up to ?1 million. This further reinforces a previous warning issued by PNP back in February, adding that those sharing false information are criminally liable under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

In addition, local government officials and private hospitals who refuse to follow the directives of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, along with businesses that refuse to accept contracts for materials and services needed in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic are criminally liable as well.
