Initial tests were done using a Huawei 5G smartphone
PLDT and Smart have been working on a wider rollout of 5G networks in the Philippines. After launching its first 5G tower in Clark, Pampanga and later on in PLDT’s headquarters in Makati, PLDT Chairman Manny Pangilinan shared on his Twitter account a 5G speed test using a Huawei phone—which is presumed to be the Mate 20X 5G.

From the video clip he shared, Smart’s 5G network yielded speeds as fast as 450Mbps—a far cry from the country’s current average LTE speeds. With this development, there’s a good chance that Smart might be doing a wider rollout of 5G later this year.
As for the phone used, the Mate 20 X 5G is similar to its LTE sibling except that it has a smaller 4200mAh battery, faster 40W SuperCharge, and Huawei’s Balong 5000 modem for 5G connectivity.
