Will 18:9 “Bezel-less” Phones Prompt A Renaissance For Local Brands?

Will 18:9 “Bezel-less” Phones Prompt A Renaissance For Local Brands?

Will bigger screens and low prices give local brands the edge?

Writing for Unbox for around 4 years now, I’ve noticed a definite downtick in the interest of products from local brands. Two or three years ago any product that Cherry Mobile, Starmobile, MyPhone etc. usually prompted a lot of discussion and traffic on both our Facebook page as well as the comment section of the site. But that hasn’t been true for a few months now, not even as Cherry Mobile ramps up the release of their phones equipped with dual-cameras.

Curiously though, we’ve seen an uptick of traffic in regards to Cherry’s upcoming smartphone, the Flare S6 Plus. The new phone is the company’s first ever 18:9 smartphone, sporting skinny bezels and a TrueView display as well as four cameras spread out through its body.

Our reader’s renewed interest with the Flare S6 Plus isn’t a coincidence obviously, since there’s now more and more 18:9 “bezel-less” phones being released by international brands. Prices for these phones typically go past the 10K mark, and it’s obvious that more and more people are interested in getting a big-screened phone with a 18:9 display without dropping serious money.

The new display trend might just be the new trend that local brands need to rally interest behind their products. Unfortunately, only Cherry Mobile and CloudFone are taking advantage of it so far – other local brands like MyPhone and Starmobile hasn’t teased any new phones that have 18:9 displays.

Which is a mistake. The market is hot right now for these “bezel-less” phones. It’s the next big thing in smartphones, even bigger than dual-cameras. More and more brands are adopting the new display tech to use in their devices, and local brands need to ride the wave while it’s still hot. Who knows – maybe this is just the push they need to regain precious market share again.
