YouTube’s yearly recap video dubbed YouTube Rewind has broken the site’s own record today but we’re pretty sure that it’s not exactly what the video-sharing site intended. As of today, YouTube Rewind 2018 is the most disliked video on the platform, with 10 million (and counting) dislikes.

The previous title holder was Justin Bieber’s music video for “Baby”, which previously held the record at a little under 10 million dislikes. But here’s the thing: Justin Bieber’s video needed 8 years to accumulate that many dislikes—YouTube’s recap video has only been in existence for 9 days.

The vitriol towards YouTube’s end of year video has been astounding. Many fans feel that the folks behind the site have put the community behind the advertisers they want to appeal, showing an inauthentic version of what really made YouTube great this 2018.

Many feel that this year’s iteration of Rewind was too “advertiser safe”, sanitized of all things that made 2018 memorable for YouTube and bereft of many famous YouTubers that people actually visited the site to see. The utter contempt that the community has shown to the video hasn’t stopped by the way—as it continues to garner more and more dislikes as hate for it continues to gather steam.
