Affordable Flagship Camera Shootout: Which Phone Took The Best Photos?

Affordable Flagship Camera Shootout: Which Phone Took The Best Photos?

Did you expect the result?

3 days ago we asked you to participate in our blind camera test, pitting four affordable flagship phones against one another. While we had our own comments about the photos taken by the ZenFone 5z, Honor 10, OnePlus 6 and the Mi Mix 2s, we wanted to see what you, our readers, thought about the phone’s capabilities.

Now we can finally reveal which phone is which. Phone A is the ZenFone 5z, while Phone B is the OnePlus 6. Phone C is the Mi Mix 2s, while Phone D is the Honor 10.

Most of our readers overwhelmingly picked the Honor 10 as having the nicest photos (in their eyes) of the bunch. We can’t blame them – the phone is clearly skewed towards producing the most vibrant photos of the bunch, though at the expense of highlights – dynamic range isn’t one of the things that the Honor 10 is great at.

The OnePlus 6’s camera delivered a much more natural-looking (if warmer) images, plus it has excellent low light performance as well. You can clearly see detail in the shot of the Apartment Cafe, which isn’t as defined with the Honor 10. The OnePlus 6’s exposure on the Saigon Opera House is the most even, without the distracting noise on the Mi Mix 2s and Honor 10, or the blown-out highlights of the ZenFone 5z.

Speaking of the ZenFone 5z, the camera is able to produce a bit more detail in the first shot of the altar, at the expense of dynamic range and a cooler overall photo. It also produced a great portrait shot in the bust, clearly separating the background and foreground in our bokeh shot while still retaining quite a bit of detail despite the less than ideal indoor shooting conditions.

The Mi Mix 2s meanwhile, had the best dynamic range among the four, able to capture details in the clouds in outdoor shots that are washed out in the photos captured by the other three. It does suffer the most from noise in our indoor shots.

Obviously, all four phones have their strengths and weaknesses, and the camera test only shows one side of the equation. This test, however, should give you an idea of each phone’s camera performance in relation to each other especially if you’re looking to upgrade to any of the four.
