AMD Introduces First 7nm GPU with Radeon Instinct

They’re not made for gaming, however

While NVIDIA has been bragging about real-time ray tracing with its RTX series GPU, its 12nm architecture is no match for AMD’s 7nm-based Radeon Instinct GPUs.

The new cards are based on AMD’s new 7nm Vega architecture and claim to deliver up to 7.4 teraflops (for the MI60 model) when working on 64-bit floating point data and have a 32GB (MI60)/16GB (MI50) HBM2 memory that can handle up to 1Tbps of bandwidth. You can link up to four MI60 GPUs and create a hive with AMD’s Infinity Fabric, and use two of these hives to power up a server that is six times faster than current PCIe 3.0 standards.

The main catch here is that both the Radeon Instinct MI60 and MI50 are not made for gaming. Instead, they are targeted at enterprise servers and data centers. With the amount of power they have, the Radeon Instinct GPUs aim to solve complex challenges like disease prevention, climate change, and more.

AMD is still committed to making its 7nm GPUs suitable for gaming, but that will have to wait until early next year at CES 2019.
