ASUS is the Phablet King of the PH?
In a statement given to the China Post, ASUS announced that they’re the top brand in the Philippines shipping 5.5-inch or larger screen smartphones (mid and high tier). The data backing up the claim is from the April-June market share/shipments from the International Data Corporation (IDC). This is a pretty bold claim given that Samsung has a 5-year head start as they pioneered the phablet category not just in the Philippines but globally. However it’s hard to argue against actual research released by a reputable firm like the IDC.
Despite the claim being bold, it’s actually plausible. ASUS hit a goldmine when they launched the first-generation series of the Zenfone last year. That momentum was sustained and eventually snowballed when they released the ASUS Zenfone 2. The 4GB RAM, 64-bit Intel Processor, and the affordable price tag made the Zenfone 2 a major success locally. They even followed this up with the Zenfone Selfie, Zenfone 2 Laser, and the Zenfone 2 Deluxe.
In the same statement ASUS also said that they already consider the Philippines as one of their key markets. It’s safe to say that the local Zen community knows this already as ASUS CEO Jerry Shen has visited the country twice already in the last 12 months.
In terms of new product launches for balance 2015, they’re still the ASUS Zenfone Zoom which is set to debut in the Philippines in November.
