ASUS VivoBook X403 Hands-On, Quick Review: Budget UltraBook for All-Day Productivity

We check out the VivoBook X403!

Part of ASUS’ 2019 refresh for the VivoBook line includes an entirely new model called the VivoBook X403. This model comes with an aluminum body with military-grade durability and a record-setting 24-hour rated battery life. The X403 is aimed towards digital nomads who are looking for a dependable laptop that can last for prolonged hours of productivity without rushing towards the nearest power outlet.

Compact build that can withstand tough environments

Like the VivoBook X412, the VivoBook X403 has a compact footprint. Instead of having an ErgoLift hinge, the VivoBook X403 sports an aluminum body that meets MIL-STD-810G military standards. ASUS claims that the VivoBook X403 has passed multiple tests that include extreme altitudes, temperature, and humidity. Aside from being compact, the VivoBook X403 is light at 1.3kg and thin at 16.5mm—impressive figures for an entry-level ultrabook.

Like the VivoBook X412, the VivoBook X403 comes with four-sided NanoEdge bezels, giving it an 87% screen-to-body ratio. The bezels on the VivoBook X403 is slimmer compared to the VivoBook X412 at 4.1mm.

Ports on the VivoBook X403 include a charging port, HDMI, USB 2.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB-C, combo headphone jack, and an SD card slot. The indicator lights are located on the left side, while the stereo speakers are on the bottom.

24 hours, you say?

ASUS is only bringing one variant of the X403 to the Philippines. The configuration consists of a Core-i3-8145U processor, HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU, 4GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and comes in silver blue. Unlike the VivoBook X412, you cannot upgrade the RAM and SSD on the X403—both are soldered into the motherboard.

One of the X403’s secrets to its long battery life is a built-in 4-cell 72wH lithium polymer battery—a large battery capacity for a 14-inch laptop. ASUS claims that the X403 can last for up to 24 hours, but we will have to see if that claim is true once we get our hands on a review unit.

Other key features of the VivoBook X403 include a fingerprint scanner with Windows Hello, glass trackpad with support for touch gestures, and a backlit keyboard.

That’s it for our quick review. The VivoBook X403 retails for Php 39,995 and will be available starting July 13.
