We unbox the Asus Zenfone 5!

We’ve been inundated by requests to do an unboxing and review of the ASUS’ Zenfone 5 ever since the company officially announced the price of the device a few weeks ago. It’s not hard to see why – the specs to price ratio of this product is really hard to ignore, especially when you consider that ASUS is an international brand rather than a local one. We finally picked up our review unit today and we’ll be unboxing the device for everyone!

Packaging and contents

The Zenfone 5 comes in a nice box that obviously has the photo of the product inside printed on the sleeve.

On the side of the box are small pictograms that give you an idea of some of the features of the device.

Once you open it up, you’ll see the bright red device, along with a warranty card, user manual, USB cable, charger and headphones. The headphones that Asus included in the package are actually not the typical ones that you find as they look to be nice, in-ear model. ASUS has also included two pairs of additional silicone tips of different sizes.

Initial Impressions: Handsome smartphone bursting with power

If there’s one thing that ASUS knows how to do, it’s design beautiful products. The company has an established track record for making gorgeous, functional products with their notebooks before, and that only continues with their smartphone offerings.

The Zenfone 5 may use a completely plastic body, but it doesn’t feel like cheap plastic. ASUS has made sure to include little touches of its Zen-series devices in the Zenfone 5, which includes the aluminum chin with the unmistakable Zen pattern, as well as the power button and volume rocker, located on the right side of the device.

The specs of the Zenfone line has undergone many changes and tweaks since their announcement back in January. The Zenfone 5, which was originally set to receive a 2.0GHz dual-core processor, was replaced with a 1.6GHz one instead, with a slight bump in battery to 2110mAh. The lower clock speed of the device should ensure longer battery life, though we’ll only be able to see that once we complete the review of the device.

The Zenfone 5 is also one of the few devices in its price range to sport 2GB of RAM. What’s more, ASUS told us that they’ll also be selling the 16GB storage version of the device at just Php 500 more, which makes it one of the best bang-for-the-buck devices in its price range.

Early performance benchmarks using AnTuTu also point to the Zenfone 5 as being one of the most powerful devices in its price bracket. Unfortunately, we’re wary of heat issues – we’ve seen Intel Atom powered smartphones exhibit higher than usual heat when used for continuous periods of time, something we’re hoping that the company has fixed with the release of the Zenfone 5.

That’s it for this unboxing. Watch out for the full review at a later time.
