Budget Mid-range Faceoff: Cherry Mobile S7 Plus VS. Realme 2 Pro

Budget Mid-range Faceoff: Cherry Mobile S7 Plus VS. Realme 2 Pro

Does Cherry Mobile’s newest phone have a chance against the new contender?

Cherry Mobile’s new S7 Plus impressed us when we reviewed it a few days ago, with class-leading features and a great price tag to boot. But how will it fare when compared against upcoming challenger and former OPPO sub-brand Realme and their Realme 2 Pro? Let’s find out:

Build

Both phones look great, but the devil is in the details. The Realme 2 Pro may look like it has a glass back, but don’t be fooled, it uses a plastic rear. It’s been laminated and treated to look like glass, but in the end, it’s still plastic.

The S7 Plus meanwhile uses a glass back and is devoid of any of Cherry Mobile’s branding. That glass panel isn’t just for decoration, as it allows the phone to use the Qi wireless charging standard which the Realme 2 Pro doesn’t have.

Display

The Flare S7 Plus has a 6.18-inch Full HD+ TrueView IPS display, 19:9 aspect ratio, Gorilla Glass 3, while the Realme Pro 2 has a 6.3-inch Full HD+ LTPS IPS Dewdrop display, Gorilla Glass protection. Looking at the numbers, the Realme 2 Pro has a bigger overall panel and a really, really small notch. The Flare S7 Plus’ notch is quite big, though there’s an IR camera stuffed in there that allows for face unlocks during low-light situations that justify the increased size.

Internals

Both phones sport mid-range processors: the S7 Plus has an Helio P60 chipset, while the Realme 2 Pro has a Snapdragon 660 processor. While MediaTek’s Helio P60 is pretty powerful, we still prefer Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 for raw computational power and graphical performance.

RAM and storage configs are where the two phones differ greatly. Right now Cherry Mobile is only offering the 4GB/64GB variant of the S7 Plus. Realme hasn’t officially said what the variants of the Realme 2 Pro will be in the Philippines, but choices range from 4GB RAM all the way to 8GB for RAM and 64GB all the way to 128GB for storage, giving the brand a lot of leeway when it comes to pricing.

Cameras

The two smartphones have dual rear cameras, with the Flare S7 Plus sporting a 16-megapixel f/2.0 and 5-megapixel f/2.4 combo, while the Realme 2 Pro has a 16-megapixel f/1.7 and 2-megapixel configuration.

On paper the Realme 2 Pro’s camera setup should trump the Flare S7 Plus’ but it’ll all boil down to actual image samples. To be fair to Cherry Mobile’s offering, photos from the Flare S7 Plus look really good when we reviewed it.

Battery

Capacity-wise the Realme 2 Pro has a bigger battery at 3500mAh, with the Flare S7 Plus only coming in at just 3000mAh. Cherry Mobile’s offering however, has wireless charging capability plus a USB Type-C connector, which can’t be matched by Realme’s mid-ranger as it doesn’t have the former and only has a micro USB port.

Price

Cherry Mobile’s Flare S7 Plus is priced at Php 11,990. As of writing it’s only available for people who pre-ordered it, and through mall events where buyers get around Php 6,000 worth of freebies including wireless chargers. The Realme 2 Pro isn’t locally available yet, though pricing starts at around Php 10K directly converted from Indonesian pricing for the basic 4GB/64GB version of the phone.
