Cherry Mobile pulls ahead of Samsung and other international brands
We knew that local brand Cherry Mobile was one of the most prolific smartphonebrands in the Philippines, but research firm IDC has now named the local brand as the #1 brand in the country for smartphones in 2014, pulling ahead of Korean juggernaut Samsung with a healthy 21.9% of the market share.
Coming in second is Samsung with 13.3% with MyPhone coming in third with a marketshare of 11.2%. Chinese brand Lenovo takes fourth place while another local brand, Torque, takes fifth place according to IDC.
Aside from Cherry Mobile’s rise to local smartphone supremacy, IDC also discovered that sales of smartphones now surpass those of featurephones for the very first time. Until recently featurephones still outnumbered smartphones in terms of sales which is obviously no longer the case as prices for Android smartphones have dropped to the level of some top-tier featurephones.
