Dear Sony: Change is a Good Thing

Dear Sony: Change is a Good Thing

Sony, we love you but…

When we talk about the best smartphones in the market, it’s a little odd that one of the biggest brands in the world kind of falls to the wayside. Sony is one of the most iconic brands on the planet. They make kick-ass TVs, some of the best audio gear, and really awesome cameras as well. Sadly, their mobile division hasn’t made that much of an impact compared to their other products. Yes, they’ve snagged up awards at prestigious events, like Mobile World Congress, but we rarely see their SKUs fly off the shelves.

Don’t get us wrong. We love the brand, and by no means is this a paid advertisement, so we thought we’d make a list of some of the things we’d like to see from the Japanese brand.

Refreshed Design Language

Sony has been rocking their OmniBalance design for quite some time now. We’ve seen several shifts in design trends that consumers have gravitated to, but the Japanese company has always stuck to their guns. Yes, material choices may have changed but the overall style remains the same for their Xperia phones; a rectangular slab with a considerably sized top and bottom bezel. We get it, it’s their signature and they don’t necessarily have to go with the flow, but we think it’s high time that they slimmed down their phones and did something about those tall bezels.

More Love for Mid-Range Devices

While their flagship phones get a lot of love, their mid-range devices are a little lacking. With the battle for smartphones sales primarily happening in this segment, the Japanese company is at a disadvantage compared to offerings from other brands in the market. Adding a bit more RAM and throwing in a Qualcomm SoC in certain SKUs may do a lot buoy their mid-range lineup. They also make some of the, if not the best, mobile camera sensors on the planet and we also wish they’d take advantage of that strength in this part of the smartphone war.

Lower Prices

This is a gripe we often see when we post about any new smartphone from the Japanese brand and goes hand-in-hand with our second concern. Yes, prices have steadily been increasing for smartphones, regardless of the brand, but the public outcry cannot be ignored by the company either. There are operational costs to consider, of course, plus the cost of actually having to produce the phone, but we’re pretty sure that there’s a way to get an attractive price with the company ledger still in the green.

At the end of the day, we’re hoping to see improvements for the legendary company and want to see bigger things from them; after all, competition can only be better for us consumers. We only hope that the company would take bigger strides in their mobile division to please their loyal fan base and attract more to the Sony fold as well.
