Dyson Designed a Ventilator for COVID-19 Patients

James Dyson designed the whole thing in 10 days

While we know Dyson as the brand behind those uber-cool (and expensive) bladeless fans and cordless vacuum cleaners, founder James Dyson heeded the call of the UK government to make 10,000 ventilators to support the country’s National Health Service in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dyson just took 10 days—from the time he received the call from UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson—to design a ventilator. The end product? The Dyson CoVent ventilator.

“This new device can be manufactured quickly, efficiently and at volume,” Dyson said in a letter shared to CNN. “The core challenge was how to design and deliver a new, sophisticated medical product in volume and in an extremely short space of time.”

After revealing the design for his CoVent ventilator, Dyson said that his company is working on making them ready by April. Dyson plans to donate 5000 units globally to combat the pandemic.

Ventilators are crucial in the treatment of COVID-19 patients, as they assist in breathing for those experiencing severe symptoms like shortness of breath.
