Exploring Iloilo With the ZenFone 4’s Wide-Angle Camera

Seeing things with a wider view

While we are here in Iloilo for ASUS’ media junket, we’re doing a series of tests with the ZenFone 4 using its cameras. Prior to this trip, we got around three software updates, all focusing on improving the ZenFone 4’s camera UI and photo processing. After the third update, we noticed significant improvements on the ZenFone 4’s camera, especially with its wide-angle mode.

Here are some of the shots we took using the (now improved) 120-degree wide-angle camera. Do note that these photos are straight out of the camera for better scrutiny of each shot:

A quick shot of Iloilo Airport the moment we landed. The weather was great, and using the wide-angle mode helped capture more of this airport’s clean and modern structure.

Lighting fixtures at Bistro Ocean City, where we had our brunch. In mixed lighting conditions, the ZenFone 4’s wide-angle camera managed to capture a decent shot.

The inside of the newly-launched ZenFone Concept store at SM City Iloilo. While the store is pretty small, the ZenFone 4’s wide-angle lens was useful to capture the whole interior of the store.

During the store blessing. We had no problem capturing the crowd inside of the store; the wide-angle mode of the ZenFone 4 managed to pull off a decent shot in spite of the mixed lighting conditions.

That’s the Iloilo Provincial Capitol hiding behind those trees in the background. The ZenFone 4 decided to process this photo with Auto HDR, and details managed to pop out nicely in this photo, especially in the shaded portion of this photo.

Collection of artifacts inside Museo Iloilo. Color detail is pretty decent given the lighting conditions.

Religious statues inside Museo Iloilo. While the middle part of the photo is not distorted, the ZenFone 4’s lends distortion starts to become noticeable towards the edges.

Facade of Jaro Cathedral. While the light posts exhibit distortion, the Cathedral itself is free from any distortion–quite impressive for a 120-degree lens.

Side view of Molo Church. Detail is preserved in the dark portions of this image.

Long exposure shot at Iloilo River Esplanade. Highlights are a bit blown out in this image, but if you use RAW, you can recover some detail with a bit of post-processing.
