The end of an era

While we knew that Nokia would eventually drop its name when its wholly consumed by Microsoft following their landmark agreement, we’re still pretty saddened to see the former phone giant say goodbye to its name that we quite literally grew up with. According to a letter acquired by Nokiapoweruser sent to Nokia suppliers, the phone manufacturer will be dropping Nokia Oyj and will become Microsoft Mobile Oy. Here’s an excerpt of the letter:

Under the terms of the sale, Microsoft will assume all rights, benefits and obligations of the Nokia Devices and Services business, including Nokia’s agreements with suppliers, customers and partners which pertain to the Devices and Services business. Therefore, the purpose of this letter is to update you that the current terms and conditions that you have with the Devices and Services business will not change.

Please note that upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation/Nokia Oyj will change to Microsoft Mobile Oy. Microsoft Mobile Oy is the legal entity name that should be used for VAT IDs and for the issuance of invoices.

With the deal finally reaching its logical conclusion, it’s still not clear how Nokia employees here in the Philippines would be affected. It’s more than likely that it will be business as usual, as it’s just a name change (for now). Of course, we still feel sad that one of the biggest names in mobile tech for more than a decade is dropping its iconic name, as we have many, many fond memories of playing with our near indestructible Nokia 3310. Somehow, Microsoft Mobile 3310 doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. 

We’ve reached out to both Nokia and Microsoft for comment on the issue. Microsoft is keeping mum on the entire thing, while we’ve yet to hear back from Nokia. We’ll update the story once they reply.
