Meet the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition!

Today we’re unboxing a gadget meant for adventurers and would-be action stars – the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition. If you’re not familiar with the gadget, GoPro’s are essentially small cameras that you can mount almost anywhere that record almost anything you want – from the exhilarating bike ride that you took with your friends, to the once-in-a-lifetime skydive. The GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition is the company’s most advanced camera in its current lineup, and is the smallest yet most powerful in their line.

Packaging and contents

The GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition comes in a nice box that’s half plastic and half cardboard. The actual camera is strapped in on a mount pasted on top of the actual box, along with the wireless remote. Once you take out the plastic cover and the hard acrylic shell, you’re treated to camera itself, along with the wireless remote.

To remove the camera, you need to remove the remote first by opening the box and squeezing the two legs that hold the remote’s stand in place. After you take out the remote, you squeeze the two plastic legs on the back of the camera to free it from the plastic stand attached to the box.

Inside the box you’ll find the manual, assorted cables, additional quick release buckles, a surfboard mount and a 3-way pivot arm, as well as an additional non-waterproof back for the camera housing.

Initial impressions: tough, solid and incredibly sturdy

One of the reasons why GoPro’s cameras are highly regarded by the people who use them is because of their legendary indestructibility. This is mainly because of the cases that the actual camera units are housed in. The one in the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition is the standard waterproof case, which is waterproof to 131 feet, or around 40 meters. But water isn’t the only thing that the case can take – there are many documented reports of GoPros getting tossed out of cars at high speed, being crushed into rocks, and falling at extreme heights – all without damaging the camera and in some cases, the actual case itself. Heck, this video shows a GoPro falling from the edge of space and falling to earth without any ill effects. We’re not exaggerating when we say that this is probably one of the toughest gadgets out in the market, aside from Nokia’s 5110 of course.

Like we mentioned before, the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition is the company’s most advanced yet. The Hero3+ sports a couple of new features – WiFi connectivity, up to 4K resolution recording, 30 percent more battery than the previous model, and so on.

You control the GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition through 3 ways – the buttons on the actual device, the WiFi remote and through an app that you can download via Google Play or through Apple’s App Store.

Gopro’s cameras have a myriad of aftermarket mounting solutions available for it. For our test, we’ve mounted it to our Ops-Core FAST Base Jump helmet and will be taking it out for a spin when we play airsoft on Sunday.
