Here’s What Android Looked Like 10 Years Ago

It’s amazing how far the OS has come

10 years ago on November 6, Google officially released the very first public beta of a little-known OS dubbed Android. Back then Google wasn’t as big as it is today, Nokia and BlackBerry were still the juggernauts of the mobile industry and Apple’s iOS was just starting to pick up steam.

It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without Android today, since it’s the most used mobile operating system in the planet, with iOS behind it. Yet 10 years ago Android wasn’t even optimized for a touchscreen display – the video linked above shows Google founder Sergei Brin talking about Android in the demos as if it was meant for a phone with a QWERTY keyboard.

But even at its early stages, it was clear what Google wanted for the OS. It wasn’t about just the phone – it was about an ecosystem that would inevitably power thousands and thousands of other devices, and we’re glad it took the direction that it did. It’s amazing to see just how far Android has come from its humble beginnings to what it is today.
