Honor 8C Unboxing, Quick Review: Another Solid Budget Option

Let’s Unbox the Honor 8C!

The market is now rife with amazing options for less than Php 10,000 and it looks like another device is about to be officially added to the mix — the Honor 8C. This device was launched internationally late last year and while we’re still waiting for it to get priced in the Philippines, its release in India had it pegged in this highly contested battlegrounds.

The Honor 8C that was sent to us is a marketing unit so it is missing a couple of things inside the box that you should get when you purchase the device online or through their authorized sellers.

Our unit only came with a SIM ejector, micro USB cable, and the charge. There should be a jelly case that ships with it, alongside the documentation as well.

One thing that we immediately noticed on the Honor 8C is its slight deviation from your typical gradient design that we’ve been seeing on a lot of devices lately. Instead of having the color shift from deeper shades to a pop of color, you’ve got more of a vignette effect with black borders that transition into the Aurora Blue that our device came in.

There are other color variants listed for the 8C like Nebula Purple, Platinum Gold, and Midnight Black but we aren’t sure what they’re bringing to the country as of press time.

The device is made out of plastic with a unibody design and has been given a matte finish that also sets it apart from its glossier competition. There is still a bit of sheen to make it eye-catching and can still be a bit of a fingerprint magnet despite its appearance though.

The Honor 8C has a 6.26-inch HD+ IPS Display, which gives you a pixel density of 268 pixels per inch. If you’re used to having a screen with a higher resolution, you’ll definitely notice the difference but remember that it’s pretty much at par with device’s competition so we aren’t about to knock it too much.

Color reproduction is pretty great and so are the viewing angles. We’ve yet to take the device out during the day so we’ll have to see how it handles the extreme brightness brought about by the summer sun.

You may have already noticed by now but the Honor 8C has a rather sizeable notch, especially when you compare it to other phones in the market that have adopted a dewdrop. Thankfully, you can easily hide this behind black bars if you aren’t a fan of the cut out by going into the display settings.

While we’re at it, the notch houses the phone’s 8-megapixel camera at an aperture of f/2.0 along with a dedicated flash unit for taking those night time self-portraits and the earpiece, of course. We’ve been hearing that the front camera has a fixed focus though.

Moving along to the back and you’ll find the dual rear camera setup that consists of a 13-megapixel main shooter at an aperture of f/1.8 and is equipped with phase detection autofocus. While the secondary camera on the 8C is a 2-megapixel depth sensor at f/2.4 to help out with the bokeh effect.

For the phone’s innards, it’s rocking a Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor and is apparently the first smartphone to launch with this SoC. For our review unit, this has been paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage but we aren’t sure if this is the only configuration that will launch in the country since it does have a higher variant in India.

It’s been smooth sailing so far having it used it for a couple of hours and we’re pretty sure you can game a little bit on this device. We’ll reserve judgment for our full review and you might want to sub to our YouTube channel to see how it handles some of your favorite mobile games.

The Honor 8C runs on Android Oreo 8.1 with EMUI 8.2 on top of it and is juiced up by a 4000mAh battery. It does have support for fast charging though so you will be able to top it up faster than usual.

As mentioned earlier, we don’t have the official price tag for the Honor 8C just yet but we should have the details by tomorrow (March 28) afternoon so we’ll update you guys about its official sticker price in the Philippines as well as its availability if this device does pique your interest.
