Huawei Ascend G525: Worthy Competitor to Local Brands

It was only a matter of time before Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei became more competitive in the budget Android smartphone market here in the Philippines. They’ve done away with their ICS and Gingerbread offerings and now have a solid quad-core Jelly Bean product that’s definitely going to turn some heads — the Huawei Ascend G525. This device sports a very elegant design, solid internals, and a fascinating custom user interface for an aggressive price of just Php6,990. We’re currently putting it through our review cycle and we’d like to kick things off by sharing with you our unboxing.

Some Thoughts on the Performance and Over-all Value

Arguably one of the nicest looking smartphones below Php7,000
Arguably one of the nicest looking smartphones below Php7,000

We’ve been using the Huawei Ascend G525 as our daily driver for the last week now. Over-all we’re very impressed with the value the device offers especially given the low price. Here’s a quick lightning overview:

The Huawei Custom Emotion UI delivers a unique Android experience. No app grid here. It’s like you’re using iOS but on Android (in terms of layout). However it does get laggy a bit especially if you’re going back to the home screen. If you don’t want this UI you can just download a launcher and customize it as much as you want.
Most games we played ran pretty well. No major issues save for the zombie pile-up on Dead Trigger.
Hardware design is definitely one of the best for this price range. Only one that beats it is probably the Cherry Mobile Razor.

As far as initial impressions go, we’re happy with the Huawei Ascend G525. If you’re on a tight budget and you want a new smartphone, this is definitely worth considering. It’s no wonder that this got into our mid-year Top 10 Quad-core Smartphones Under 10k list!
