Huawei Unveils Second-generation Foldable, The Mate Xs

Small improvements make for big gains

Huawei has officially unveiled the newest version of its big-screen foldable. The Mate Xs isn’t drastically different from the first generation device, but there’s still plenty of tech underneath that’s worth a look.

The biggest change from last year? A more durable hinge, and a better screen-to-body ratio. The Falcon Wing hinge has been improved, infused with a new Zirconium-based liquid metal alloy for added toughness.

5G is the name of the game for the Mate Xs – the phone now carries a Kirin 990 flagship processor with a 5G modem which will allow the phone to connect to both sub 6Hz 5G and millimeter-wave networks. RAM sits at 8GB, while storage is at 512GB.

The phone still sports with an 8-inch OLED panel, with an overall size of 8-inches when fully unfolded. When folded you get a 6.6-inch display on the front and a 6.38-inch display on the rear.

The phone ships sans Google Mobile Services, which is still thanks to the US government’s blacklist on the company that’s been in place since last year. The phone ships with Huawei’s AppGallery as a replacement, with access to many top apps that users have grown accustomed to.

As for the cameras, the phone ships with almost the same set of snappers as the Mate X last year: a 40-megapixel main camera with an f/1.8 wide-angle lens, 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and 8-megapixel telephoto camera, topped off with a 3D depth-sensing camera.

The phone also has super-fast charging capabilities, with charging speeds as fast as 55w thanks to Huawei’s SuperCharge tech.

Unlike the original Mate X, the Mate Xs is a phone made for global audiences. The phone is priced at Euros 2499 (around Php 138K) and will be shipping in Global markets next month.
