Huawei Y6s Unboxing, Quick Review: New Budget Contender

One more before 2019 ends

Huawei has one last phone release before the year ends. Their new Y6s replaces the Y6 Pro 2019 that was launched earlier this year, and comes with newer internals and a fingerprint scanner. The phone also comes with larger storage and a nicer-looking build, which makes it look more expensive than it really is. Here’s what you get what you buy this affordable device:

Unboxing and packaging contents

Like its predecessor, the Y6s comes in a white cardboard box with a photo of the phone outside. Inside the box, you have the phone itself, SIM ejector pin, MicroUSB cable, and 5W charger. The unit sent to us is not yet the official retail package, so the Y6s might come with a jelly case too.

Google Pixel, is that you?

Instead of a smooth finish, the Y6s comes with a dual texture finish that is first seen with the Misty Lavender and Mystic Blue P30 Pro. The upper portion has a glossy finish, while the bottom part has a matte texture—giving the Y6s a Google Pixel-like design, especially with the fingerprint scanner placement and lone 13-megapixel f/1.8 rear camera.

You have the usual location for the port and buttons: SIM card tray on the left, power and volume controls on the right, headphone jack on top, and loudspeaker and MicroUSB at the bottom.

Like the Y6 Pro 2019, the Y6s has a 6.09-inch HD+ display with a notch that is home to an 8-megapixel selfie camera. A screen protector is pre-installed, though you might want to change that later on as it is not as durable as most aftermarket screen protectors.

Finally, an octa-core processor

One of the key upgrades on the Y6s is its shift to an octa-core processor with the Helio P35. The 12nm processor aims to deliver better performance than the Y6 Pro 2019’s Helio A22 processor and is at par with the Snapdragon 450 in synthetic benchmarks.

While it also has 3GB RAM, Huawei doubled the internal storage on the Y6s with 64GB. The battery remains the same at 3020mAh. We will have to do our usual string of tests to see how the Y6s’ internals perform in real life.

As for the cameras, the Y6s has the same front and rear snappers as the Y6 Pro 2019. While they have the same camera hardware, the Y6s’ octa-core processor might be a factor in delivering better quality photos than its predecessor.

That’s it for our unboxing and quick review of the Y6s. We will be putting the phone through its paces so stay tuned for the full review soon.

The Y6s is priced at Php 6,990 and will be available on December 14.
