IDC Q1 2018: Xiaomi, Huawei Posts Double Digit Growth As Smartphone Market Gets Tougher

People are getting tired of upgrading it seems

IDC released its latest results for Q1 of 2018 and two brands are the obvious stand out winner for the first quarter of this year. Both Huawei and Xiaomi posted double digit growth from their last year’s results, but Xiaomi deserves extra praise thanks to their phenomenal performance.

Huawei grew 13.8% in overall shipment volume, managing to ship 39.3 million phones Q1 this year compared to just 34.5 million in the same period last year. Xiaomi though has managed to grow exponentially, posting an astounding 87.8% growth, shipping 28 million phones in Q1 of this year compared to just 14.8 in the same period last year.

As far as overall marketshare goes for Q1 of 2018, Samsung still sits pretty at the top, followed by Apple. Huawei is at third place, while Xiaomi is at fourth. OPPO is now at the fifth slot.

IDC notes that there’s been a YoY decline of smartphone shipments in Q1 this year (around 2.9% total), which they attribute to less smartphone converts.

“Globally, as well as in China, a key bellwether, smartphone consumers are trading up to more premium devices, but there are no longer as many new smartphone converts, resulting in shipments dropping,” IDC associate research director Melissa Chau said in a statement. “When we look at it from a dollar value perspective, the smartphone market is still climbing and will continue to grow over the years to come as consumers are increasingly reliant on these devices for the bulk of their computing needs.”
