India-based Karbonn Plans to Launch Dual-boot Android/Windows Phone This Year

One smartphone, two OS

We have dual-boot notebooks, but no dual-boot smartphones. Well that won’t be the case a few months from now, as India-based manufacturer Karbonn promises to deliver a smartphone that boots both Windows 8.1 and Android. The company expects to launch the first smartphone that uses the dual-boot function in the next six months.

The company has gone on record to say that they have just inked a deal with Microsoft, according to a Times of India Report. “Microsoft has eased the regulations and is opening up its platform for other players. We signed the agreement two days ago and will launch a range of Windows phones in about three months,” Sudhir Hasija, the company’s chairman said.

The new phones will allegedly be targeted at professional and tech-savvy users, which tells us that the final product won’t be cheap. Still, we guess that there’s some utility if you had a dual-booting phone – you like a particular app for instance, that doesn’t run a particular OS – and shows that Microsoft is really loosening the reins on WP 8, all things considered.
