Is An Unlocked Galaxy S8 Active Coming?

The Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification of a device seems to say yes

Samsung has always released a more rugged version of their Galaxy S series of phones, but since the Galaxy S6 Active these phones were meant purely for the US market as AT&T exclusives. Well, it seems that won’t be the case with the Galaxy S8 Active, if a recent certification from the WiFi alliance is to be believed – they just certified a Samsung phone that has a model name of SM-G892U, which is similar to the model name of the AT&T Galaxy S8 Active, which bears the moniker of SM-G892S.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 5.8-inch WQHD Super AMOLED shatter-resistant display, 2960 x 1440 resolution
  • 64GB expandable storage, via microSD
  • 12-megapixel rear camera, f/1.7 aperture, Dual Pixel, OIS
  • 8-megapixel front camera, f/1.7 aperture, AF
  • Dual SIM
  • 3G, LTE
  • Fingerprint scanner, iris scanner, facial recognition, heartbeat sensor, IP68 certification, USB Type-C port, Bixby AI
  • 4000mAh battery, fast charge
  • Android 7.1 Nougat (TouchWiz UI)

If the phone does turn out to be an unlocked device, it’ll be the first time since the Galaxy S5 Active that a ruggedized version of Samsung’s flagship will be made available to the general public without having to buy one through carrier partners.

The Galaxy S8 Active is an attractive phone for perpetually clumsy people, as the curved display and fragile glass body has been replaced with a flat, shatter-resistant display, aluminum exterior and was built with military-grade materials for maximum toughness. If it does hit the open market, expect to pay around $850 (Php 43K) for the privilege of owning one.
