Is GoPro Done with Drones?

A Bit of Bad Karma, Perhaps?

GoPro has always been the name synonymous to action cameras but the company shocked the world when it teased of a low-profile drone that had the potential to edge out DJI. After the release of the videos and all the hype built, DJI then released the more compact Mavic Pro that overshadowed the GoPro Karma.

There was still some interest in GoPro’s drone but a design flaw in its battery (along with other problems like horizon tilt) would soon trigger a recall that the company just couldn’t shake even after they’ve supposedly corrected the problem and restocked store shelves. As a result, GoPro has just announced that they are downsizing in a big way; laying off 200 to 300 employees this week that are mostly coming from its drone division.

This is the fourth round of layoffs for the action camera manufacturer that have been struggling to turn a profit in recent years. GoPro says that they will be restructuring the business, perhaps to focus more on their bread and butter. Our source does, however, mention that the company could be working on a second iteration of the GoPro Karma.

Personally, we think they should cut their losses for now and recoup with killer releases. What do you guys think? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
