KaiOS to Expand Market, Add New Features

New form factors will be supported as well

As the third most popular mobile operating system (Android and iOS being the other two), KaiOS is setting its ambitions to the next level following investment funding from TCL and Google. Google’s investment to bring in its core apps like Maps, Search, and YouTube to KaiOS. Currently, HMD Global’s Nokia 8110 4G is the best example of KaiOS’ potential: making lower-end feature phones have capable features like navigation, games and social media.

KaiOS CEO Sebastien Codeville said that part of their plans includes optimizing the OS’ performance on existing lower-end devices—100 million of them and counting. Much-requested features such as multi-tasking, tabbed browsing, and copy-paste functionality is also in the works as well.

For the second half of 2019, KaiOS plans to introduce new form factors, along with penetrating new markets around Africa, Middle East, Latin America, and Asia.
