LG G7 ThinQ Hands-On, Quick Review: Flyin’ Higher than the G6!

LG Joins the Party!

After months of waiting, LG finally released their flagship for 2018 — the LG G7 ThinQ. The name may be a mouthful and some of you may be asking what it means? Well, to put things as plainly as we can, the G7 is part of the company’s line of premium products that have AI functionalities built in and can be used to create a smart home; something we saw at LG’s InnoFest earlier this year.

That’s a story for another time. Let’s check out the LG G7 and take a look at some of its main features because they’ve really packed it on in this flagship device.

What Is It?

As mentioned earlier, the LG G7 ThinQ is the Korean company’s latest flagship device to hit the scene. It ticks all the boxes that one looks for in a device of its class, such as a top-of-the-line processor, premium build quality, plus water and dust resistance, just to name a few. They’ve retained a lot of the features from previous G series phones that we loved and worked on a few of their weak spots too.

Let’s jump in and give you guys a quick look at what separates this device from the pack.

The LG G7 ThinQ’s SuperBright Display. The picture doesn’t do it justice.

While we’re a little sad that LG didn’t include an OLED display on this phone like the one on previous models, the G7 features a Super Bright display that can go up to 1000 nits, which means that sunlight legibility isn’t a problem at all for this device. The display itself measures in at 6.1-inches and is at QHD+, or 3120×1440 resolution, to give you really crisp details. There is a notch on the display, like most of the phones in 2018, but LG put a nice spin on things. You can cover up the notch with black bars or customize it a little bit more with a gradient or even a rainbow effect too.

LG has been killing its audio game for quite a while now and we’re glad to see that they’ve kept the 32-Bit Quad DAC on the G7 but they’ve added on a few more features to further the cause. It now supports DTS: X 3D Surround Sound to give you cinematic audio on-the-go plus it utilizes the space inside the phone as a resonance chamber that pumps up the volume and brings the bass when you set it on a table or any flat surface.

The Boombox Speaker is perfect if you want to share beats with your friends; not bad at all considering it only has one down-firing speaker on the bottom of the phone.

LG elevates the camera game of the G7 as well. You’ve still got a dual rear camera setup with the secondary cam still having a wide-angle lens but both of them are now at 16-megapixels. The main camera also has a wider aperture at f/1.6 that should give you better depth-of-field without the portrait mode on and low-light photos also get a boost from the Super Bright camera mode.

We mentioned that this device has some AI functionalities and, yup, it makes itself evident with the cameras. There are scene detection modes that’ll help adjust settings plus suggest filters and angles.  The front camera also gets some love with a bump up from 5-megapixel to 8-megapixels too. We like it that it recognizes your skin tone, hair color, and other features to give you a customized beauty mode that doesn’t go overboard.

Check out a few of the photos we took with the LG G7 ThinQ.

The LG G7 ThinQ also gets a helping hand from Google Assistant. There’s a dedicated key on the left side of the phone that lets you launch the app or even use Google Lens if you want to learn more about certain things, such as where to get a specific pair of shoes and how much they cost.

If you need a hands-free approach, the G7 also features Far-Field Voice Recognition, so you can say “Okay Google” from the couch and the device should be able to hear you and give you an assist.

How Much Is it?

The LG G7 ThinQ has been given a price tag of Php 42,990 and is available in two color variants in the Philippines: Morrocan Blue and Aurora Black. We were really hoping to see the Raspberry Rose and Platinum Grey variant as well but the two that arrived on our shores look pretty darn sharp too. The pre-order period for the device has been extended to June 17 so if this was enough to pique your interest and make the purchase, it’ll come bundled with a Fast Wireless Charge, an LG Tone Infinim Wireless Headset, and a case that’s worth a little over Php 10,000.
