Makati To Give Out Free ID Microchips For Pet Cats, Dogs

It’ll give vets a quick look at your pet’s vaccination history

Makati pet owners will be happy to know that the city is planning to give 32,000 cats and dogs free identification microchips this October. The PET iChip technology is set to be implemented in all 27 barangays of the city next month, free of charge.

The chips will be implanted by licensed veterinarians from the Veterinary Services Office (VSO) and would contain information about the pet, it’s owner, as well as data on its rabies vaccination. All dogs and cats regardless of age are eligible for the procedure.

Once implemented, the microchips will give vets a quick look at a pet’s vaccination record, and will allow the VSO to monitor how many dogs have been given anti-rabies shots overall. It’ll also help in pet recovery, since the owner’s address and contact information as well as the pet’s name would be implanted in the chip.

The chips themselves utilize RFID tech, much like the technology used in Beep cards used in the MRT. A dog lover herself, Mayor Abigail Binay said the program would protect both the pets and their owners.

“The technology will enable us to keep tabs on dogs, ensure they are in the best of health and return them to their rightful owners in case they get lost,” Binay said in a statment.

“This is important for people like us who consider dogs as part of our families,” she added.

Around 7,000 PET iChips are on hand and are ready to be implanted on dogs by October, with the rest of the microchips implanted within the year.
