Mandaluyong is Recruiting Volunteer Drone Owners and Pilots

The Mandaluyong office for Disaster and Risk Reduction Management recently tweeted asking for drone owners to be Accredited Community Disaster Volunteers.

Off-the-shelf Drones have been used effectively for this purpose in the past, especially in search and rescue missions. One of my favorite case studies is SWARM (Search with Aerial RC Multi-Rotor). They’re a volunteer group of 3,000 drone pilots worldwide that can assist for search and rescue missions. Apart from the Drones, they use different kinds of cameras and software applications built for search and rescue missions.

There maybe some issues with privacy though as having drones flying around the city capturing video might be an invasion of privacy of normal citizens. That’s why it’s good that the Mandaluyong project is a government-led initiative which means there should be safeguards on privacy and volunteers will only use their drones in highly populated areas when needed.

The next level, of course, is for local government units like Mandaluyong to have their own trained drone pilots for SAR and mapping/scouting missions. A professional that’s properly equipped, trained, and readily available is always a better option than just relying on volunteers.

If you’re a drone owner and you want to sign up, just head on over to the Mandaluyong City Hall and ask where their Disaster and Risk Reduction office is and get details.
