Here’s the lowdown on MediaTek’s latest SoC
MediaTek offered the world a glimpse of their new Helio G85 chipset courtesy of Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 9 last week, but it’s only today that the company is giving us the lowdown on their new mid-range SoC.
While the chip is derived from the company’s Helio G80 chip, it sports a more powerful Mali-G52 GPU that has a higher 1GHz clock. MediaTek’s add-on tech, like HyperEngine technology that boosts gaming performance via tweaks in the chip as well as VoW (voice on wakeup), promises better game performance than ever before. In addition, the new chip also promises intelligent prediction of both WiFi and LTE concurrency as well as the ability to switch between networks in just 13ms, which should reduce hair-pulling lag issues to a minimum.
While Xiaomi’s new phone is the first to get the new chipset, MediaTek is now shipping their new baby to other companies to use as well, so expect even more gaming-capable smartphones with the chip in the near future.
