We go hands-on with the Meizu MX4!

Whenever Novo7 Tech extends us an invite to visit them at their office or store, we’re always up to it. Last time we did they allowed us to fondle the THL 5000, and today, we braved Manila’s terrible, terrible traffic to visit their Lucky Chinatown branch for the chance to spend some quality time with the Meizu MX4. The Meizu MX4 has created quite a lot of buzz in the online community, because of it’s the first and currently only device to run Mediatek’s MT6595 octa-core processor with integrated LTE. As a result, it manages to score a god-like AnTuTu score which you’ll see below.

Initial Impressions: Really premium looking smartphone with a monster processor lurking inside

Meizu has spared no expense in making their latest flagship smartphone. While it’s not completely made out of aluminum (having a removable plastic back) it does posses aircraft grade aluminum frame that makes it lighter than the MX 3 that came before it.

Overall the phone screams premium when you first see it, and that feeling continues on as you start to use it. While the back is removable, the only clue you’ll have that it can be pried open is the small notch for your fingertip. The plastic case fits so well with the back that it appears, from a distance, to be a device with a non-removable back.

Meizu is a company that likes doing its own thing, so instead of a standard 5.5-inch display, they opted for a 5.36-inch one instead. The display also has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, as well as full HD resolution. The bezels on the 5.36-inch display is also incredibly thin – only 2.6mm – which allows the MX4 to have an overall size no bigger than Xiaomi’s Mi 3. The display uses new tech from JDI and Sharp that gives it a contrast ratio of 1,100:1 contrast ratio, 85% of the NTSC gamut, as well as 500 nits of brightness.

One thing that appears to be missing are the capacitive Android keys that’s traditionally found beside the home button. Meizu’s done away with that and replaced them with gesture based system starting from that lone capacitive key. Going back a step requires you to swipe up. We’ll be doing a deeper dive into the Flyme OS once we get our review device.

The MX4 uses a 20.7-megapixel camera module direct from Sony. Essentially, this is the same camera hardware that Sony uses for its top of the line Xperia devices, which allows the MX4 to take great photos, as well as a phenomenally fast burst shooting rate that puts even our DSLRs to shame.

Of course, everyone is interested to see just how powerful the MX4 is. As they say, the proof, is in the pudding. It manages to achieve an ungodly score of 51406, literally leaving the competition in the dust. MediaTek has gone a long way, and has now managed to put in production a processor that even Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 processor can’t beat.

We’re sure that Qualcomm will strike back with their new processors (that’s the nature of tech) but you’ll have to keep in mind that this device is capable of delivering this monstrous score at a price point that’s more than half of the flagships out in the market today.

Speaking of price, the Meizu MX4 will come with a Php 14,999 price tag for the 16GB version. That’s some fantastic pricing right there, which also makes the MX4 a big threat to Xiaomi as far as flagship pricing is concerned. Novo7 Tech will also sell both the 32GB and the 64GB version. The 32GB version will be Php 2,000 more, though there’s no price yet for the 64GB version.
