More Smartphones will Sport Dual Pixel Tech thanks to Samsung

Translating to an improved portrait mode using a single camera

With affordable smartphones sporting flagship-level features like 18:9 displays, expect them to have improved portrait mode capabilities a la Google Pixel 2 soon–thanks to Samsung.

The South Korean company launched its Isocell Fast 2L9 image sensor today, and boasts of dual pixel technology while having a 1.28?m sensor size. In case you do not know, dual pixel technology is found on the Google Pixel 2, which means that you can achieve depth-of-field capabilities using a single rear camera, unlike dual rear camera setups found in most smartphones today.

Samsung explained that they made the 2L9 in response to “market demand for sleeker smartphones with advanced features.” That being said, Samsung’s new tech piece will make dual pixel technology a mainstream feature in smartphones in the future–and that includes mid-range and entry-level phones.
