Initial Review and Unboxing of the Motorola Moto G

Motorola was a bit late to the smartphone game which is kinda sad really since they really made a big impact in the global mobile phone industry when they released the super slim Motorola Razr 10 years ago. Fortunately they’ve made a huge effort to catch up including launching their iconic Razr series as super thin Android smartphones. Things started to become more interesting though when Google bought them. First we saw the Motorola Moto X, a gorgeous, highly customizable, and power-packed phone with unique software features at an awesome price. More importantly they released a follow-up budget-friendly powerhouse called the Motorola Moto G. Featuring a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, Adreno 305 graphics, and an HD IPS display, the Moto G can be considered a strong contender in the low-mid range smartphone segment as it sells for just under Php12,000. We were finally able to get our hands on a unit via Kimstore and we’d like to share with you guys our unboxing and initial impressions.

Before anything let’s take a look at the complete specifications of the Moto G.

Motorola Moto G Spec Sheet

  • 1.2GHz Quad-core Processor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 Chipset
  • Adreno 305 Graphics
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB/16GB Internal Storage
  • 4.5-inches HD (720 x 1280) IPS Display, Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • 5.0-megapixels primary camera with autofocus, LED flash
  • 1.3-megapixels secondary camera
  • Dual SIM, Dual Standby
  • 3G, HSPA+, WiFi, WiFi Hotspot, Bluetooth, GPS/aGPS/GLONASS
  • Android 4.3, Upgradable to 4.4
  • 2070mAh Battery

The only real downer there is the non-expandable storage. Buying the 8GB model is a huge mistake unless you’re the type that doesn’t install too many apps, music, and videos in your smartphone. The 16GB model is more acceptable and practical. Other than the storage everything else looks good.

Unboxing Video

If you’re too lazy to read the whole article we made a short unboxing video with our initial impressions below, hehe. Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube Channel!

Hardware Hands-on: Sturdy, Compact, and Practical

The Motorola Moto G came in a carton box with product print up front and some bits of information at the back. It’s definitely one of the most stripped down boxes we’ve ever seen. We opened it and we were immediately greeted by the 4.5-inch Moto G with a branded screen protector. We picked it up and peeled off the protector.

When Motorola and Google were building the Moto G they were definitely focusing on the bare essentials so that they could deliver a great product with an affordable price tag. Fortunately on the hardware side they didn’t go the usual glossy generic plastic route. The Moto G comes in a solid body with a smooth rubbery finish. It feels good in the hand and the back plate comfortably and naturally sinks into the flesh of one’s palm. The weight is just right as it gives you a sturdy reassurance that you have a premium product with you.

Up front we have the 4.5-inch display which has a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 glass panel. Based on our tests this should be able to withstand your usual keys, coins, and other sharp objects you stick in your pocket or bag together with the phone.

When it came to the display quality, we were completely surprised at how good it looked! Even at just 1280 x 720 resolution it came out beautifully thanks to the IPS OGS touchscreen panel. To the untrained eye it would be difficult to tell the difference between this and smartphones with full HD resolutions.

At the back we have the removable back plate. The 5MP shooter is top center and just below it is the LED flash. Under the flash we have the recessed Motorola logo. Along the sides we have the usual buttons and ports: volume, power lock, headphone jack, and the micro USB port.

We dug deeper into the box and found the earphones and the wall charger. What we found weird though was that it didn’t come with a separate USB to micro USB cable for charging and data transfer. The wall outlet charger has a non-detachable USB to micro USB chord. Looks like Motorola was really, really, really scrimping on this one.

Over-all in the hardware side the Motorola Moto G kicks serious ass. It has a gorgeous display and a compact and solid body. Definitely looks much more expensive than the actual price tag (which is usually always a good thing).

Software: Smooth and Fluid

On the software side the Moto G didn’t disappoint! So far we’ve only encountered noticeable lag when we had a variety of RAM/processor hungry apps all running in the background. Performance gets much better though when the user learns to use the different resource tracking and optimization apps.

To those who are curious, yes it can run Dead Trigger 2 with no major issues *Two thumbs up!*.

The Motorola Moto G has a very compelling proposition. Competitive specifications combined with the sturdy hardware at a fraction of the price other brands sell their quad-core offerings is definitely going to get a lot of heads turning.

We’ll be spending more time with this baby in the next few days and hopefully we can come out with the full review early next week.
