We unbox MyPhone’s my36!

While rival firms have been making waves the past few months, local brand MyPhone has been unusually quiet lately. Now we know why – the company has been taking steps to consolidate its product lines and has decided to focus on its core competencies, essentially going back to a formula that worked for them. This means simpler branding, value for money devices and a focus on nationalistic imagery. This morning, we’ll be taking a look at their new my36 smartphone that’s set to be released first in Lazada today. Before we begin, let’s check out the specs:

Packaging and contents:

Like we said earlier, MyPhone is in the midst of re-inventing itself and are trying to recapture what made them so successful eight years ago when they first stepped into the market. Part of that is putting Filipino pride front and center, which is essentially what the my36 packaging gives you.

The front of the package has the image of the phone with the PH flag as the screensaver and on the back cover. On the left side of the box, you’ll see the words Pinoy Phone along with the PH map on the side. The right side of the device shows the quick specs of the phone.

Open up the package and you’ll see the phone inside, along with the typical accessories that you can expect – a pair of headphones, a USB cable, charger, warranty card and a manual.

With every purchase of the my36, MyPhone is also throwing in a free watch to commemorate their 8-year anniversary in the PH. The watch itself comes in a metal tin that has a lot of traditional pinoy images on it. As for the watch, it looks pretty darn spiffy as far as freebies go.

Initial impressions: Nice looking phone with curved edges, but you’ll either love or hate the PH map on the back

The my36 is ridiculously good looking though there is a caveat: if you don’t like the throwback PH map, that may be a deal breaker for you. Anyway, the front of the phone uses a 2.5D curved display, along with a full HD 5.2-inch display. The quality of the glass and the brightness of the screen really shines in person and is close to the quality of the one we saw in Firefly Mobile’s Allure 64 LTE.

The phone also sports a metal-looking, but probably plastic frame surrounding the body that adds a nice premium feel to the overall package. While the marketing material released a few days ago for the phone may paint the device as having a nearly bezel-less display, that’s not really the case.

There are big fat bezels on the bottom and top of the phone even though the my36 uses on-screen keys for navigation, which makes the device a little tall even if it does have a 5.2-inch full HD panel. The volume rocker and power button is on the right while the 3.5mm jack and USB port is on the top and bottom, respectively.

Remember that caveat we said earlier? Well, if you turn the phone over you’ll see the PH map make a return on the faux leather back. It’s going to be a point of contention for sure for a lot of people, but again, that’s what MyPhone was known for a few years ago – impassioned display of nationalism through their products, and the my36 is no exception.

One possible sliver of hope for people who are not too keen on the PH map is that the back is removable (though the battery is not) – there may be third-party companies that may be able to supply an aftermarket back for it.

Internally the phone is powered by MediaTek’s octa-core MT6753 running at 1.3GHz paired with 3GB of RAM. That’s a hardware combo that we’ve seen before, and the result of our first AnTuTu test didn’t shock us one bit. There’s 16GB of storage that you can further expand via a microSD card. The phone runs Android 5.1 out of the box.

MyPhone is initially launching the my36 with Lazada todayat a price of Php 6,999. For people who don’t like shopping online, you’ll be glad to know that Lazada only has first dibs on the my36, and will be hitting MyPhone stores after running on sale for just a week with the same price.

And that’s it for this unboxing! As usual we’ll be reviewing the my36 in the next few weeks so stay tuned then.
