Next Nexus Smartphone to Use MediaTek Processor?

It makes sense…kind of

There’s rumors out in MediaTek land that the next Nexus smartphone will use the low-cost Taiwanese chip makers’ processor. At the surface it makes sense – aside from showing off the latest version of Android, the Nexus line of devices has been geared towards providing a relatively low-cost smartphone to the masses, something that MediaTek is sort of an expert at. But there’s a couple of things that needs to be addressed first before this ever goes through, if it is a legitimate rumor, chief of which is MediaTek’s stubborn refusal to share kernel source code as part of the GPL agreement, and instead asking for money from their partners for something that should be released freely.

If Google manages to forge an agreement with the Taiwanese chipmaker, it might mean that the next iteration of Google’s Nexus smartphone may be way cheaper than it was previously. Let’s just hope that this rumor becomes a reality sooner rather than later (or not at all).
