NVIDIA has just kicked off their CES press conference with the announcement of their new mobile CPU: The Tegra K1. Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and CEO of NVIDIA promises that the new mobile CPU will be able to deliver PC class gaming technologies to the mobile space, and is the first ever 192-core GPU based on the Kepler architecture, the same architecture that powers the fastest GPU on the planet, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti. Just imagine: top-end PC graphics in tablets that you can carry around. In fact, NVIDIA claims that the Tegra K1 has more computing power than the PS3 or the Xbox 360. Awesome, right?

To prove that the new processor is really up to snuff, Huang showed off Unreal 4 running on a Tegra K1 equipped mobile device. For people not familiar with Unreal 4, it’s the new game/engine that has extremely high PC requirements that literally makes PCs stop in their tracks. Yet the Tegra K1 mobile device managed to run it without problems, complete with elements that we usually just associate with PC gaming – real-time computing, global illumination, higher dynamic range, and insane details like dripping water, reflective surfaces and the like.

The Tegra K1 architecture will have two versions off the bat: a 32-bit quad-core, 4-Plus-1 ARM Cortex A15 CPU that goes up to 2.3 GHz that will be released first, with a more powerful custom, NVIDIA-designed 64-bit dual Super Core CPU, codenamed Denver that goes up to 2.5GHz coming later. Based on the ARMv8 architecture, which brings the energy-efficient heritage of ARM processor technology to 64-bit computing.

The 32-bit version of the Tegra K1 will be released in the first half of the year, while the 64 bit version will be released in the second half of 2014.
