NVIDIA to make Laptop Versions of its Ray Tracing-Capable RTX GPUs

Ray Tracing is coming to laptops

Gaming laptops will get more graphics muscle soon, as NVIDIA announced in CES that they are working on a mobile version of its ray tracing-capable RTX GPUs. These include mobile-optimized versions of the RTX 2070, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080Ti.

During its announcement, NVIDIA said that they have worked with brands like Acer, Asus, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo Legion, MSI, Razer, and Samsung for over 40 RTX-equipped laptops. To address the power demands of RTX GPUs, NVIDIA is using its Max-Q tech to make sure they can fit inside slim and quiet laptops.

Speaking of performance, NVIDIA claims up to 20% better performance for the RTX 2080 Max-Q compared to the GTX 1080 Max-Q, along with up to 40% improvement in energy efficiency. On paper, this translates to longer battery life for slim gaming laptops like ASUS’ ROG Zephyrus.

The introduction of RTX GPUs to laptops also means that they will be capable of running graphics-intensive games like Battlefield V at 60 FPS with ray tracing. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang even claims that these GPUs can offer twice the performance of a PlayStation 4 Pro, but we will have to do actual tests to see if it lives up to the claim. In addition to bringing ray-tracing to laptops, RTX GPUs will also bring Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS)—an anti-aliasing technique that is executed through artificial intellienge—and G-Sync as well.

The first RTX-equipped laptops will arrive on January 29, and each purchase comes with Battlefield V and Anthem for RTX 2080-equipped laptops, and either of the two for RTX 2060 and RTX 2070-equipped laptops.
