OPPO F5 Youth Unboxing, Quick Review: Slightly Downgraded F5

OPPO F5 Youth Unboxing, Quick Review: Slightly Downgraded F5

We unbox OPPO’s latest mid-range phone!

After the launch of OPPO’s F5, the company is shoring up their mid-range lineup with another device aimed at providing better selfies via AI smarts. The F5 Youth is virtually identical to the recently launched mid-range phone, though it’s taken a few downgrades to its specs and its price to make it more appealing to budget-concious users. Sporting the same 18:9 display that’s present in its more expensive brother, OPPO hopes that the new phone will be able to entice more users to enter the fold of AI-powered selfies.

Packaging and contents

OPPO’s F5 Youth comes to us in their standard white box that has a carton sleeve around it. Inside the box are the standard accessories you’d expect from an OPPO phone, namely a freebie silicon case to keep your phone pristine, USB charger, cable, a pair of headphones plus documentation.

The F5 Youth already has a plastic screen protector pre-applied, though you might want to invest in a tempered glass protector when you buy one to keep the device pristine.

Initial Impressions: A slightly downgraded F5 with better pricing

Let’s not beat around the bush: aside from very minor differences (and we do mean minor), the F5 Youth is nearly identical to the recently launched F5 both in specs and design. It still has that lovely 6-inch, full HD IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, as well as that metal-looking-but-not really unibody design that made our time with the original enjoyable.

The phone’s only aesthetic change from the F5 is the line on the top of the device has been removed, making for a cleaner-looking phone when looking at it from the back. Because of the size of the display, OPPO’s moved the fingerprint scanner that’s typically on the front of the phone to the rear, making it easier to unlock the device (at least in our experience) when needed.

The rest of the controls are scattered around side of the F5, with the power button on the right and the volume rocker on the left. Joining the power button on the right is the SIM/microSD tray which thankfully can accommodate two SIM cards AND a microSD card. The speaker grille, USB port and speaker grille are all located on the bottom of the phone.

The 6-inch, full HD+ 18:9 IPS display still looks as good as it did on the F5. Colors are nice and natural, viewing angles are plentiful and the bigger real-estate gives you more room on your screen without having to scroll down as often as a phone with a 16:9 display. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 as well, for better longevity.

OPPO’s downgraded a few things in the F5 Youth to drop the price down to what it is. Namely, they’ve reduced the megapixel count of both the front and rear camera from 16 (rear) and 20 (front) on the F5 to 13 and 16 to the F5 Youth. Aperture size has also been changed, with the rear f/1.8 aperture on the F5 made smaller down to f/2.2 on the F5 Youth. The phone still has OPPO’s AI-powered Selfie feature, however, so there’s that.

Hardware has also been tweaked slightly, with the F5 Youth receiving 1GB less RAM compared to its more expensive brother. Processor is the same though, with both phones still rocking MediaTek’s MT6763T 2.50GHz octa-core processor and 32GB of expandable storage. Battery is also identical, as well as OPPO’s ColorOS layered on top of Android Nougat.

While we’re only starting our full review of the device, you can expect the F5 Youth to perform nearly as well as the bigger F5 when it comes to selfies and computational tasks, with the rear camera’s image quality taking a bit of a hit because of the lower aperture lens and lower resolution camera. But then again, we’ll have to find out in our full review to be absolutely sure.

OPPO’s pricing the F5 Youth at just Php 13,990, which undercuts the current 18:9 offerings of its major rivals today. Should you buy it over the F5? We’ll have to see in our full review.
