OPPO Find X Hands-On, Quick Review: Cameras that Play Peek-A-Boo

The Find Series is Back in the Philippines

The last time we saw a Find series phone from OPPO in the country was quite a while back. It took a couple months for it to arrive on our shores after its launch at the Louvre in Paris but the Find X is finally here. With 2018’s current flagship processors in tow and nifty hidden cameras for a bit of cool factor, it’s time to give you guys give a quick look at the best that OPPO has to offer.

What is the OPPO Find X?

OPPO’s Find series of phones always offered the best specs available when they got released so it’s not surprising to see what the OPPO Find X has under the hood. Before we get to that, let’s talk about the exterior first.

The OPPO Find X nearly ticks all the boxes that you would usually expect to find on flagship phone in 2018. It’s sandwiched by Gorilla Glass 5 panels, which are both curved to make for better ergonomics. It has an aluminium frame. The Find X even employs gradients in its two available colour variants, Glacier Blue and Bordeaux Red, to give it a bit of panache.

Sadly, it is missing water and dust resistance, which would have helped round out the whole package.

In terms of button and port layout, there’s a bit of a curveball to what we’re used to seeing. You have the power button on the right side of the device.

The volume rocker is found on the left.

On the bottom, you’ll find the two-sided SIM tray, USB-C port, and speaker grille.

The front of the Find X is almost all screen with very minimal bezels. It has a screen-to-body ratio of 87-percent. The display itself measures in at 6.42-inches with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and uses an AMOLED panel. As you can expect, colors are nice and vibrant with deep blacks as its base; yet another tick in terms of what a flagship device offers.

Did I mention that the display is curved too?

If you managed to miss all the news surrounding the OPPO Find X so far, you might be wondering where the cameras are.

Well, to give you an almost all-screen smartphone, OPPO has decided to hide the cameras. The top of the device pops up to reveal both the rear and front shooters once you launch the camera app. OPPO has taken to calling this their 3D Stealth Camera.

On the back, dual shooters at 16MP and 20MP; both with an f-stop of f/2.0. The main rear camera is equipped with phase detection autofocus and OIS. You’re also getting AI scene detection.

The front camera is at 25-megapixel with an aperture f/2.0 and, as expected from OPPO, AI beautification is present on this device as well. Yes, you have AR stickers too.

To be honest, we are a little concerned about the motors that hide the camera module since more moving parts give you higher chances for a device to malfunction. We’re pretty sure that OPPO has tested this to high heavens before releasing it to the public but we just can’t help but worry about it. Time will tell.

We’re a little sad to see that OPPO has omitted the Fingerprint Scanner on the Find X. To make up for it they’ve beefed up the facial recognition by adding on a variety of sensors (Floor Illuminator, IR Camera, Ranging Sensors, and Dot Projectors) to help you keep your device secure plus the ability to unlock your phone quickly and accurately too.

We’ve already mentioned that the Find X has quite a bit of power under the hood and that’s all thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, which is paired with a generous 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Given our experience with a similar setup, you shouldn’t run into any trouble with heavy usage and all the latest triple-A titles for mobile devices.

The Find X runs on Android Oreo 8.1 with ColorOS 5.1 on top of it and is juiced up by a 3730mAh battery with support for the company’s fast-charging solution — VOOC; something we’ve been sorely missing on their latest F series releases.

How Much Is It?

The OPPO Find X is priced at Php 49,990 and pre-orders for the device are on-going until the 1st of August, which you can also do online via Shopee, Lazada, and Argomall. Each pre-ordered unit comes with a Rock Space headset, a power bank, and a game controller worth Php 5,000.

But there will be a more opulent Lamborghini Edition.
