OPPO R17 Pro Hands-On: 3 Cameras, 2 Batteries, 1 Smartphone

We got our hands on the OPPO R17 Pro!

OPPO is finally bringing an R series phone in the Philippines, the OPPO R17 Pro. Before its official launch next month, we were privileged to be sent to Shenzhen, China to check out the device.

It looks gorgeous … if you’re into gradients.

Ours came in the ambient blue color variant. While women would probably be into it, most guys might find it too flashy. What sets it apart from the many phones with a gradient design is its matte finish. It is not just aesthetically different but is quite practical too because it is less prone to smudges and is not as slippery as phones with a glass back.

A larger screen real estate

Its tiny waterdrop notch, similar to that of the OPPO F9, and its under-display fingerprint scanner gives the device a rather large screen. It has a 6.4-inch, full HD+ AMOLED display.  It comes with a Gorilla Glass 6 protection which is said to be scratch resistant and can withstand drops from greater heights.

Triple camera set up

No, it’s nothing like the Huawei P20 Pro. Instead of the 40MP main sensor, 20MP monochrome sensor and 8MP telephoto lens, the OPPO R17 Pro has a 20MP main lens, 12MP secondary lens and a time-of-flight or TOF 3D stereo camera.  It is said to be more for augmented reality, but right now, it’s hard to tell what it can really do until we’ve really spent time with the device so check back with us for the full review. As expected, it has AI to help users take better photos and night mode to assist lowlight shots.

It has two batteries

Juicing up the system are two 1850mAh batteries giving it a total of 3700mAh. According to the brand, the 2 batteries are essential for safety as it comes with Super VOOC charging, which from experience, tops up the device incredibly fast.

What’s powering it?

The OPPO R17 Pro runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage. It is one of the few phones running Qualcomm’s new processor, which boasts of a 10nm process and Kryo 360 cores. This should be more than enough for day to day tasks and even a bit of multitasking on the device.

How much will it cost?

While there is no Philippine pricing for OPPO R17 Pro yet, it costs CNY 4,299 in China, which is roughly Php 34,000. We will find for sure out during the local launch on November 7.
