At an almost impossible 4.8mm, it’s not hard to dispute Oppo’s claim, though at that size people are curious to see how the R5 stands up to abuse.

Initial Impressions: it’s not a one-trick pony

When companies launch a thin smartphone, most people assume that it’s only defining characteristic is its anorexic proportions. While that’s usually correct most of the time, that’s not the case with the Oppo R5. While the Oppo R5 is indeed thin, it’s also pretty beefy to hold, as the phone’s chassis is made out of 3D welded aluminum alloy. Oppo also said that because of how thin the device is and how much attention to detail they give to their devices, they also had to polish the frame after it’s machined to give it an almost perfect finish.

Because of the size of the R5, Oppo needed to creatively deal with the resulting thermal signature that’s usually dissapaited in bodies of thicker phones. To deal with this, Oppo created a special cooling element to take away heat from the important bits of the device.

The Oppo R5 is also one of the few devices that uses Qualcomm’s latest octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor. That’s paired with 2GB of RAM, and a 5.2-inch AMOLED display. Suprisingly enough, the R5 sports a 2000mAh battery with Oppo’s VOOC fast charge technology built-in, an achievement for something that has such a small body.

The R5 will cost USD 499, or around 22K, though we don’t have local pricing yet. Local Oppo execs told us that the device will be launching in the PH early 2015.
