OPPO R5 Unboxing: Thin Is Still In

Oppo R5 02

We unbox OPPO’s sexy R5!

After many moons we’ve finally managed to get our review unit of the OPPO R5, the company’s sexiest and thinnest smartphone yet and former world’s slimmest phone title holder. Unlike the OPPO N3 that’s obviously aimed at people looking for a unique smartphone with a powerful camera and processor, the R5 obviously has more of a fashionable slant, thanks to its anorexic proportions.

OPPO R5 specs

  • 5.2-inch AMOLED display, 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • 32GB of internal storage
  • 13-megapixel rear camera with AF, F2.0 lens
  • 5-megapixel front camera
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, A-GPS

Packaging and contents

Just liket the OPPO N3, the R5 comes in a very swanky box made out of tough plastic with a carton sleeve placed over it. Once you open the package up, you’ll see that the R5’s accessories are arranged the same way as the N3’s when we took the covers off the box.

There’s a SIM pin to remove the SIM tray on the device, headphones, USB cable, VOOC fast charger and various manuals. OPPO’s also included a plastic case as a freebie, as well as a USB connector for the 3.5mm jack (we’ll dive into this later).

The Oppo R5 is as thin as three Php 1 coins stacked together.

Initial Impressions: Still one of the thinnest phones we’ve ever seen

Oppo R5 10

Now that we’re able to paw the R5 ourselves without the crowds present a few months ago, we can truly appreciate all the work that the Chinese firm put in the design of the device. The phone is primarily made out of metal and aluminum, with a hand-polished steel frame capping off a very beautiful design.

One thing that we liked is that while the R5 is thin, made out of metal and not the most comfortable phone to hold for extended periods of time, it’s not slippery at all – something that we can’t say for the all-metal iPhone 6.

Getting the R5 to that extreme 4.85mm thickness meant that OPPO had to compromise on a few things with the R5. The steel outer frame of the device needed to be extraordinarily strong, as to avoid the phone bending under stress when placed in users’ pockets.

There’s no 3.5mm jack anywhere, and users will need to use either a Bluetooth headset or the included USB to 3.5mm jack connector when using wired headsets. Incidentally, that also means you won’t be able to listen or watch movies on the R5 and charge it at the same time if you’re using a wired headset. The camera module also sticks out from the back a fair bit, which may lead to scratches on the lens itself when placed on rough surfaces.

Oppo R5 14

As far as hardware goes, the R5 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. On benchmark tests the R5 scored decently, but we were expecting far more in terms of performance, especially considering the price. Then again, you’re not getting the R5 because it’s fast – you’re getting it because it’s unbelievably thin.

Anyway, that’s it for this unboxing, watch for the review of this in the coming days. The Oppo R5 retails for Php 21,990.
