OPPO Reno Unboxing, Hands-on: A Day With The Shark

OPPO’s next release in the PH has a unique pop-up camera

OPPO is launching their new Reno line of premium smartphones in the Philippines in the next few days, but before that happens the company set aside some time for local media to touch and try both the Reno and Reno 10x Zoom. The subject of today’s unboxing is the regular Reno, the mid-range offering that sports a shark-fin selfie module and a gorgeous glass body.

Packaging and contents:

OPPO’s Reno line is the company’s creme de la creme for 2019 (so far) so it’s not surprising that the company went all out with the packaging. The phone is encased in a sleek, tall white box that feels extremely premium and not at all cheap, with a small silhouette of the phone’s rear on the front.

Once you open it up, you’ll see the phone, its back cover, a pair of headphones, USB Type-C cable and charger.

Beautiful outside, a mid-range beast on the inside

OPPO really has been working overtime in designing their mid-range and flagship products and hopes that their overhauled design language will make users see these phones on the same level as the premium devices from their main competitors Samsung and Huawei.

Like most premium phones, the OPPO Reno has a metal frame sandwiched by glass on both the front and rear. The design is very modern, with the rear possessing gentle curves and rounded corners, with the dual camera module in the center of the body.

In a stroke of design brilliance, OPPO put a small, raised nub right below the camera module. That nub isn’t there for aesthetics – that nub is there so that the rear cameras don’t contact the surface that you place your phone on, which OPPO hopes will mitigate scratches on the dual camera module.

While our review unit is in the classic black color (in this case, Jet Black), the Ocean Green variant of the phone looks much prettier and has this quirky gloss but matte contrast on the glass rear which is really a sight to behold.

One thing we really don’t like about the Reno is how heavy it is. The regular Reno tips the scales at 185 grams, while its bigger brother the Reno 10x Zoom is even heavier, at 215 grams.

This makes the Reno family of phones one of the heaviest devices we’ve handled this year.

The regular Reno has a 6.4-inch OLED panel with nary a hint of a notch anywhere. That’s made possible via the phone’s unique shark-fin pop-up camera located on the top of the frame that holds the 16-megapixel f/2,0 selfie camera.

The shark-fin camera module is quite a departure from normal pop-up cameras that have, uh, popped up on OPPO’s other models like the F11 Pro. But just like other motorized camera units, the shark-fin pop up module rises in less than a second (around 0.8 seconds if you’re really counting) and retracts quickly when the phone detects it’s falling.

The display also sports an in-display fingerprint scanner that’s faster than what’s on previous models.

As for the actual display, it’s bright, beautiful and looks great, and the phone’s UI also allows you to tailor the display depending on your preference, from cool to warm, or from vivid to gentle if you want colors looking a little muted.

Moving on to the phone’s rear cameras, the OPPO Reno has the same 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 camera that’s on its more expensive flagship brother, paired with an f/1.7 aperture lens. It sheds the wide-angle camera and telephoto snapper, replaced by a 5-megapixel secondary camera with an f/2.4 aperture.

Inside the phone sits Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 processor, and 6GB/8GB of RAM and a choice of either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 processor isn’t new to us as we’ve already encountered it in previous flagships before, suffice to say that most phones that have it as their heart are incredibly responsive and quick.

OPPO’s ColorOS based on Android 9 Pie compliments the processor, along with a 3765mAh battery, along with 20W fast charging.

OPPO’s Reno will be priced at Php 26,990 and will be available for pre-order come June 15 to 20. Customers can reserve and pre-order their units at any OPPO store. It will be available for purchase beginning June 21, in OPPO stores nationwide.
