Who would have thought
IDC’s Q1 2016 numbers are out, and holy cow we did not expect the results that we’re seeing now. Chinese brands OPPO and Vivo have pulled an upset, and have managed to enter IDC’s worldwide top 5 vendor list alongside Huawei, LG and Apple.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, both brands managed to post impressive year-on-year growth. For Chinese firm Vivo, they managed to increase shipment volumes by 123% compared to the same period last year. OPPO’s growth is even more impressive – posting a 153.2% year-on-year growth compared to the same period last year.
The biggest loser for this year? Apple – their 1Q2016 shipment volumes shrank by 16.3%, which coincides with the dire earnings call that confirmed the company sold less iPhones these past few months. Samsung managed to skirt by with just a 0.6% decrease in devices shipped.
The global heads of OPPO must be pleased with themselves – of course there’s still a long way to go before they’re even close to nabbing the top spot.
