Philips Fidelio P9 Wireless Portable Speaker

In the last two years we’ve seen a lot of portable wireless speakers in different sizes. Some are more technologically advanced like the AirPlay enabled AQ SmartSpeaker. The Divoom Bluetune-1, on the other hand, focuses more on portability and value for money. We also have the Braven 650, a powerhouse audio solution for people on the go (even has a built-in mic). None of the speakers we’ve reviewed though can match the class, elegance, and simplicity (and maybe the price hehe) of the Philips Fidelio P9.

Timeless Design

The Philips Fidelio P9 is a solid rectangular block of metal bookended with wood on the sides. To add to the sophistication and luxurious feel of the device, it has an integrated leather cover at the front and back. The front leather flap has a magnetic clasp that keeps it closed when not in use. In short… it looks absolutely stunning.

All the controls and buttons are neatly placed on an aluminum-finish band running along the center on the top of the device. There you’ll find the battery LED power indicator, power, mute, volume, and Bluetooth connectivity LED light. On the sides are the wall charger port, standard audio jack (if you don’t want to connect via Bluetooth), and a USB slot for charging your mobile devices.

When it comes to design we don’t have anything bad to say about the Philips Fidelio P9.

Connectivity and Sound Quality

There are two ways to connect to the Philips Fidelio P9. First you can simply connect via Bluetooth. Just hold down the power button for a bit and the Bluetooth LED light should start to flash blue and white. After that fire up your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, turn on Bluetooth, and look for the P9.

After connecting the P9 can stream your favorite music wirelessly. Over-all sound quality is topnotch (for Bluetooth speakers) as the speaker is powered by 2 soft dome tweeters, 4 woofers, and 2 wOOx which helps expand sound stage and powers deeper bass. At max volume you can probably turn your living room into a dance floor, hehe.

We also didn’t experience any signal/connection problems which is usually the bane of Bluetooth speakers. We tested it with iOS, Android ICS, Android Jelly Bean, Windows, and even BlackBerry 10. All of them worked fine.

Verdict: One of the Best… and Priciest

Undoubtedly the Philips Fidelio P9 is one of the nicest Bluetooth powered portable speakers in the market. Unfortunately it’s also one of the priciest. It sells for a little over Php20,000 and it can be bought in Astro Vision and Astro Plus stores in malls. There are a lot of more affordable options out there but if you want to make a statement then this is probably something worth considering.

If this was priced at around 15k it would have been a perfect buy!
