Revisiting the Huawei P10 Plus: Still Shoots Leica Boss?

Revisiting the Huawei P10 Plus: Still Shoots Leica Boss?

One of the Best Mobile Shooters Around

Huawei introduced its current flagship devices, the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus, at Mobile World Congress earlier this year. While we were getting familiar hardware and the same lenses with Leica’s stamp of approval on the P10, it was the P10 Plus that had the second-generation Summilux Leica lenses and more hardware upgrades that really caught our attention.

Now that we’re nearing the last quarter of the year and we’ve been introduced to more flagship devices and are expecting quite a few more smartphones to be released in the coming days, we thought it was time to revisit the Huawei P10 Plus to see if it’s still worth spending your hard-earned money on.

Hefty but Handy

In terms of aesthetics, there wasn’t that big of a leap between the P9 Plus and the P10 Plus. Yes, it still has a full metal build and that strip of glass up on top to highlight the piece de resistance of Huawei’s flagships — the dual cameras — but it’s edges have been given more curves to help with ergonomics. You’re definitely going to need to get a good grip on this device, because it is on the hefty side.

In this point of the game, we’re seeing the design language shifting to favor edge-to-edge displays and the P10 Plus lacks the IP certification most flagships have. Nonetheless, it’s a classy looking smartphone that also comes in an array of stunning colors for those who want something other than the usual black or white device.

The Kirin 960 Is Still Nimble As They Come

We first saw the processor on the Huawei P10 Plus on the Mate 9 late last year, and it’s still a rather formidable SoC. Pair that with a generous 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage and you’ve got a pretty beastly device despite being one of the first out of the gates this year.

The P10 Plus has been my personal phone in between review units and it handles day-to-day tasks well; given the load we put on our phones. that’s saying a lot. When the mood to game on my mobile device strikes, I am also pleased to report that it handles the newer, more demanding games out in the Google Play Store without flinching.

Dual Cameras Don’t Disappoint

Of course, we’re going to save the best for last.

Huawei made waves when they revealed that they were teaming up with Leica to create a smartphone snapper that would change the game with the P9. They’ve definitely raised the bar even higher for dual camera equipped smartphones with the P10 Plus and the second-generation Leica lenses called Summilux. IMHO, it’s still one of the better smartphones out there for mobile photography; especially if you’re into portraiture.

It’s not just because of the bokeh you can tack on after the fact, but it’s the sharpness of the images you can get thanks to its monochrome sensor. Shooting black and white images with this phone will give your shots a lot of drama and carefully combined with the portrait mode on this device will definitely help churn out some awesome photos.

And remember, it also won in two of our polls against the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

Is It Still A Good Buy In the Second Half of 2017?

Priced at Php 36990, the Huawei P10 Plus is definitely on the level of most of the flagships available today. Yes, you are missing things like water resistance, but the ample amount of RAM and on-board storage on this device makes up for it in terms of performance and money saved from getting that microSD  card (or at least stave off the need for it a bit longer). Plus, it is one of the best set of cameras on a smartphone you can currently get in the market today. It’s also pretty hard to deny that the cameras on the Huawei P10 Plus still produce gorgeous photos.

Is it still a good buy now that we’re about to hit the “ber” months? It hasn’t left our shortlist, so we definitely still recommend that you put it on yours.
