Samsung’s Infinity Flex Display is More than a Gimmick

Will it define a new category of mobile devices?

Samsung introduced the latest prototype of its foldable display—dubbed Infinity Flex Display—at their Annual Developer’s Conference.

Encased in a black frame, the prototype device consists of two displays: a 4.5 “external” screen that is used when it is in phone mode, and a 7.3-inch flexible AMOLED display that unfolds and turns the phone into a tablet. The external display has an 840 x 1960 resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio, while the foldable display comes with a 1536 x 2152 resolution and a 4.2:3 aspect ratio.

Together with Samsung’s One UI, apps are designed to transition flawlessly from phone to tablet mode. One example is with Google Maps, where the app will resize itself automatically when you unfold the device. In a nutshell, the Infinity Flex aims to be a device that functions both as a phone and tablet literally.

Samsung has not revealed details such as price and launch date for the device during the conference. Given that it has two displays—one being a cutting-edge variety—it will definitely be expensive.
