Should You Buy Huawei’s MateBook D15?

Sleek, powerful and affordable

While most people know Huawei as the maker of beautiful, powerful smartphones with great cameras, the brand also makes other consumer electronics products like headphones, audio devices, and notebooks. We’ve already reviewed their MateBook 13 before, which was quite a good device considering that the company hasn’t been in the notebook business long.

But this article isn’t about the MateBook 13 – it’s about the new, recently introduced MateBook D15 that has been receiving quite a bit of hype recently. With plenty of glowing reviews not just from us but from other publications as well, a lot of people asking if it’s really worth it.

The short answer is yes, but obviously you’re here for a long answer, so here goes: it has plenty of features that you usually don’t associate with an affordable notebook. Now while its sticker price of Php 37,990 is a lot of cash, that’s actually an incredible price for a notebook like this.

For one thing, you’re getting a 15-inch notebook for the size of a much smaller 14-inch device, thanks to the reduced bezels on the side and the top. This “FullView” design allowed Huawei to reduce the overall physical size of the MateBook D15 compared to a 15-inch notebook with regular-sized bezels. Huawei did have to move the webcam down to the function keys, cleverly hiding it in between the F7 and F6 keys.

The recessed webcam is better for privacy since it’s not uncovered when you don’t need it, which is better than just putting masking tape on it which is usually done by the more paranoid of users.

The MateBook D15 is also one of the few notebooks in the market under Php 40K that has an aluminum chassis. Having a metal-bodied notebook isn’t all about looks either, as an aluminum chassis means less flex and a more premium feel and a sturdier notebook overall, which is important when you’re carrying it around with you.

The MateBook D15 is the only notebook in its price range that integrates the fingerprint scanner into the power button, which means faster, smoother log-ons when you turn it on. We also like the nifty Huawei Share feature that allows you to quickly and easily move files between the notebook to your phone, though the caveat here is that it only works for Huawei smartphones.

The MateBook D15 also comes with good hardware for the price: AMD’s Ryzen 53500U processor with Vega 8 graphics, along with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD drive paired with a 1TB HDD.

The processor is good enough for most people and also comes with Vega 8 graphics. While you can play less-strenuous games on the MateBook D15, ultimately the GPU is there to speed up tasks like photo and video editing.

One nice thing that we also like with the MateBook D15 is that it charges via USB Type-C via a 65W charger. This means that it’s capable of being charged via a compatible power bank if you’re really low on power.

Ultimately, Huawei’s MateBook D15 is a really good buy for people looking for their first notebook out of college, It’s a fair chunk of change, but it’s undeniable that there’s solid value behind Huawei’s newest notebook offering.
