Sony to Join the Drone Market with Airpeak

DJI, watch out: Sony announced that it is set to join the drone business with Airpeak. In its announcement, Sony explained that its new project is inspired by the recent proliferation of drones in improving workflow efficiency and energy savings especially in the industrial sector. While the specifics of the said project is not yet clear, Sony describes the project as one that utilizes AI robotics, suggesting that Airpeak will have unique applications that are not seen in drones yet.

While drones have improved through the years, incorporating tech like obstacle detection, smart navigation, and anti-collision detection, these tech are more on a theoretical level than one that is applied on both consumer and industrial drones. It would be interesting what Sony has in store once it reveals more about the project by second quarter of 2020—especially given its expertise when it comes to imaging sensors.
